Search Under Way for Two People Missing off Withernsea in East Riding of Yorkshire
A search operation is underway for two people reported missing off Withernsea, East Riding of Yorkshire. Emergency services were called just after 3pm. Humberside Police confirmed the death of a 67-year-old man; an unconscious man recovered at the scene later died. Police have stated the death is not thought to be suspicious, and searches continue for others. The rescue effort has involved ambulances, helicopters, and a fixed-wing aircraft operating in horrendous conditions with waves reported to be up to 9.8 feet high. There has been an increased police presence in and around the area as the search continues.
The RNLI has issued warnings about the risk of cold water shock when water temperatures are 15C or below, noting that UK sea temperatures typically range between 6C and 10C. Authorities urge people to check sea conditions and understand their personal limits before entering the water. This operation follows a separate incident in which a 51-year-old man died in the sea at Brighton on New Year’s Day.
