Senator Cynthia Lummis to Retire in 2027, Ending Term as Crypto Ally in Congress
Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), widely recognized as crypto's closest ally in Congress, announced she will retire at the end of her current six-year term in January 2027 and will not seek reelection in 2026.
Lummis has been a leading advocate for crypto-friendly legislation, serving as the inaugural chair of the Senate Banking Committee's subcommittee dedicated to crypto issues. Throughout her tenure, she has been a key negotiator on the crypto market structure bill and introduced multiple bills related to market structure, crypto taxes, and establishing a U.S. government bitcoin stockpile.
Despite plans to push major crypto legislation to President Trump's desk in 2026, Lummis cited that the energy required for another six-year term does not align with her current energy level, prompting her decision to retire.
Her retirement will open a Republican seat in Wyoming, a strongly Republican state where the last Democratic senator was elected in the 1970s. Lummis previously secured approximately 73% of the vote in the 2020 Wyoming Senate race.
