The size of the Senedd is set to increase from 60 to 96 Members of the Senedd (MSs), with constituencies reduced from 40 to 16. Under the new proportional system, six MSs will represent each constituency. These reforms are accompanied by a renovation of the chamber, which will add 36 desks and upgraded technology at an estimated cost of £4.2 million to taxpayers.

Elin Jones described the changes as a once-in-a-century reform. The next Senedd election date has been set for 7 May 2026, with the new system expected to determine who governs Wales.

The reforms have received backing from Welsh Labour, Plaid Cymru, and the Welsh Liberal Democrats, while the Welsh Conservatives have expressed criticism. There are concerns about public awareness, as turnout for Assembly and Senedd elections has historically been under 50%, and many voters remain unaware of the changes.

Yvonne Murphy of The Democracy Box has called for greater voter education on the reforms. Campaigners are urging voters to register and participate in the election on 7 May to ensure a well-informed and engaged electorate.
