In the year leading up to March, 262 prisoners were mistakenly released, marking a 128% increase from 115 wrongful releases in the previous 12 months, according to government figures published in July.
Among the prisoners released in error were Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian sex offender, and Hadush Kebatu, who arrived in the UK on a small boat and was jailed for sexual assault before his accidental release and subsequent deportation.
Authorities have been working through the night to re-incarcerate individuals released by mistake, including Kaddour-Cherif.
In response to these incidents, Justice Secretary David Lammy announced the implementation of the strongest release checks ever to prevent further errors.
