Steve Clarke to assess Harvey Barnes's commitment ahead of Scotland World Cup plans
Steve Clarke, the Scotland manager, will evaluate Harvey Barnes's commitment to the national team ahead of the upcoming March friendly matches to determine the winger's readiness to switch allegiance to Scotland. Barnes, who has one England cap from his substitute debut against Wales in October 2020, has recently indicated in an interview that a switch to represent Scotland remains a possibility.
Scotland's return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence has revived discussions about Barnes's international future. Clarke emphasized that players must demonstrate true commitment to Scotland, noting that the current squad numbers 26 players with limited spaces available. Introducing Barnes close to the World Cup would not disrupt team harmony if he is fully committed, Clarke said.
Clarke is also open to extending his tenure as Scotland manager beyond the World Cup. His current contract concludes after the tournament, and talks with the Scottish Football Association are scheduled for early next year to discuss future plans including training camps, bases, and the World Cup programme.
The Scotland manager expressed confidence in this group of players, believing they can compete effectively at the 2028 tournament, though not all current players will remain involved. Scotland’s World Cup group includes Brazil and Morocco, recalling a similar lineup from 1998.
