Survey Finds Perplexity AI Most Likely to Fail While Anthropic Gains Momentum Amid OpenAI Concerns
A recent survey conducted by Cerebral Valley Summit involving over 300 AI founders and investors named Perplexity as the private AI startup most likely to fail. Investors showed a preference for Anthropic, while OpenAI was also viewed with skepticism.
Anthropic has demonstrated significant momentum, with revenue increasing from $87 million at the start of 2024 to over $5 billion by August 2025. In September 2025, Anthropic closed a $13 billion Series F funding round, valuing the company at $183 billion. The startup now holds about 32% of the enterprise AI market. Notable achievements include the launch of Claude Code in May and a growing enterprise customer base exceeding 300,000. Claude generates more than $500 million in annualized revenue.
In contrast, OpenAI faces concerns over its financial outlook. Although projected to generate $13 billion in revenue by 2025, it is expected to incur losses of about $9 billion that year. Operating losses could reach $74 billion by 2028. Additionally, around 95% of ChatGPT's approximately 800 million users do not pay for the service. OpenAI plans to spend over $1 trillion on computing infrastructure during the next decade.
Perplexity has encountered legal challenges and controversies related to data scraping. Amazon sued in November to block Comet browser purchases. Reddit filed a lawsuit in October over scraping activities. Japanese newspapers Yomiuri, Asahi, and Nikkei also initiated copyright cases. The BBC has threatened action regarding scraping practices. The CEO of Cloudflare compared Perplexity to North Korean hackers, highlighting the severity of some accusations.
