Swiss Prosecutors Investigate Bar Managers Over Deadly New Year's Fire in Crans-Montana
Two bar managers of a Crans-Montana venue, Le Constellation, are under criminal investigation by Valais prosecutors for homicide by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence in connection with a devastating fire on New Year’s Day. The blaze killed about 40 people and injured over 100 others as the venue was packed with young celebrants.
Investigators believe the fire was started by fountain sparklers mounted on champagne bottles held near the ceiling. Images circulating showed the foam soundproofing panels on the basement ceiling catching fire, prompting authorities to assess whether these materials complied with safety regulations and if the use of sparklers was permitted.
Officials will also examine safety measures at the bar, including the availability of fire extinguishers and the design of escape routes as part of the ongoing probe. The case may lead to prosecutions if criminal liability is established.
Stéphane Ganzer, Valais’ top security official, acknowledged that something failed and that mistakes may have occurred. However, Crans-Montana mayor Nicolas Féraud stated that checks on the bar were not lax.
