Sydney Council Seeks to Shut Down Islamic Centre Linked to Controversial Preacher Wisam Haddad
Canterbury Bankstown City Council has issued a cease-use directive for the Al Madina centre in Bankstown after surveillance indicated the premises were being used as a prayer hall without proper approval. A records review dating back to 1970 found the site never had approval to operate as a prayer hall and was only recently approved to operate as a medical centre. The council states the current use appears contrary to its approved purpose.
The council's decision follows increased scrutiny after a similar directive was issued in December 2023 for a building in Eldon Street, Georges Hall, where a gym approved building was alleged to be used for prayer meetings. Surveillance and photographic evidence were gathered following media reports from May about Wisam Haddad, also known as Abu Ousayd, preaching at the centre.
Al Madina Group has stated that Haddad is no longer involved in the management of the centre, with his involvement limited to occasional guest speaking engagements. The centre is now under new independent management and rejects misrepresentation of Haddad's role.
The cease-use notices take effect immediately, with non-compliance potentially resulting in penalties of A$3,000 for individuals or A$6,000 for corporations, alongside possible further action. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns endorsed the council's decision, describing it as decisive and important for the state.
The council will continue monitoring the premises to ensure compliance with approved uses.
