Tashkent Supermarket Opens New West Village Location in 2025
The Tashkent supermarket opened its newest location in New York City's West Village in 2025, marking an expansion from its original store in Coney Island, established in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy. The chain has since grown to five New York locations and a wholesale facility in New Jersey, which includes a sausage company and slaughterhouse.
The West Village store specializes in Central Asian staples such as manty, plov, samsas, chak-chak, and kompot. Its hot food bar features plov and samsas and includes a smoked fish counter. The supermarket sources products from former Soviet Union countries, obtaining cheeses from Georgia, bread from Ukraine, and nuts and raisins from Uzbekistan. At the same time, it blends American products with Central Asian items.
Since March 2025, the store's popularity has been bolstered by social media and influencer coverage, complemented by local endorsements such as praise for manty from New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. The supermarket aims to serve both Central Asian immigrant communities and curious New Yorkers, noting that more than 1.2 million people from former Soviet republics live in the US as of 2019, with significant Uzbeki Bukharian communities in areas like Forest Hills.
However, hot food prices at the store have risen by at least $1 in 2025, attributed to Manhattan's real estate costs and congestion-pricing effects impacting delivery truck expenses.
