Tashkent Supermarket Opens West Village Location, Expands Central Asian Food Presence in NYC
Tashkent, a supermarket chain specializing in Central Asian foods, has opened its newest New York store in the West Village in 2025. This expansion marks the growth of Tashkent from its origins as a single Brooklyn shop established in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy to a network of five New York City locations, along with a New Jersey wholesale sausage company and slaughterhouse.
The market offers traditional Central Asian products such as manty, plov, samsas, chak-chak, and kompot. It sources specialty items from the former Soviet Union, including cheeses from Georgia, bread from Ukraine, and nuts and raisins from Uzbekistan. The West Village store aims to serve Central Asian immigrant communities including Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Turkmen, and Bukharian populations, as well as to attract newcomers interested in exploring Central Asian flavors.
Since March 2025, Tashkent has gained increased attention on social media, with influencers promoting the hot food bar featuring plov and samsas, drawing new customers. Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani praised manty, highlighting local appreciation for these offerings.
The United States has over 1.2 million residents originating from former Soviet republics as of 2019, a demographic that Tashkent has strategically targeted through its New York City locations across Brooklyn and Queens.
Due to Manhattan real estate costs and congestion pricing, prices for hot food at the West Village location have risen by at least one dollar in 2025. Nonetheless, customers note that the store carries notably cheap figs among a mix of affordable staples and premium imported products.
