Temwa Chawinga Continues to Shine as Kansas City Current's Top Scorer, Following Sister Tabitha's Footsteps
Temwa Chawinga has emerged as Kansas City Current's leading scorer and most valuable player for two consecutive National Women's Soccer League seasons. After signing a two-year contract with Kansas City Current in January 2024, Temwa quickly made her mark with an impressive debut season tallying 20 goals and earning both the Golden Boot and MVP honors, awards she successfully retained in 2025.
Temwa's elder sister, Tabitha Chawinga, is a notable footballer as well, having won a Golden Boot in Serie A Femminile with Inter and currently playing for OL Lyonnes. Tabitha has been a mentor and support figure to Temwa throughout her career. The sisters have been likened to the Williams sisters of football for their shared success and influence.
Temwa experienced challenges early in her career, including loneliness in 2018 when Tabitha left Kvarnsvedens for Jiangsu LFC. During that period, Temwa received support from her Malawian teammates and assistance with language. In 2020, Temwa moved to Wuhan Jianghan, reuniting with Tabitha in 2021, who advised her to concentrate on building her own future.
The move to Kansas City required Temwa to relocate to the United States, where she settled in with a welcoming and supportive teammate environment, including preseason training in Los Angeles. Looking ahead, Temwa aims to contribute significantly as Malawi prepares to make its debut in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations next year, with ambitions beyond just participation.
