Tensions Escalate as Trump Warns of U.S. Intervention in Iran Amid Ongoing Protests
Former President Donald Trump warned on Truth Social that the United States would intervene if Iran violently kills protesters, stating that the U.S. is "locked and loaded." This statement comes amid continuing unrest across Iran, where at least seven people have been killed in clashes during widespread protests affecting several regions, including western Iran.
The unrest is fueled in part by Iran's deteriorating economy, with the rial trading around 1.4 million per U.S. dollar, exacerbating public anger and increasing pressure on the government. Iranian authorities have responded with arrests and reported seizures of weapons linked to the unrest.
Iran's reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian has signaled a willingness to engage with protesters but faces limited options given the economic crisis and the ongoing violence.
Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, cautioned against U.S. interference, stating that it would destabilize the region and harm American interests. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between peaceful protesters and those causing disruption.
The backdrop to the protests also includes heightened military tensions, as Iran attacked the Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar in June 2025. This base houses approximately 10,000 U.S. troops and serves as a key hub for American military operations in the region.
