Thailand Accuses Cambodia of Ceasefire Breach Amid Border Dispute
Thailand's army has accused Cambodia of breaching the newly signed ceasefire following weeks of deadly border clashes that have displaced nearly one million people. The ceasefire came into effect at noon local time (05:00 GMT) on Saturday and aims to freeze front lines, ban reinforcements, and allow civilians in border areas to return.
The Thai army claims Cambodia's actions constitute provocation and violate the measures designed to reduce tensions along the border. Thailand has also stated it may reconsider the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers held in Thailand since July. Cambodia has not publicly responded to the accusations.
The ceasefire was established after days of talks supported diplomatically by China and the United States. China praised the hard-won ceasefire, while the US commended its rapid and fair conclusion. Despite the agreement, Thailand reported detecting over 250 unmanned aerial vehicles flying from the Cambodian side on Sunday night.
The border dispute between the two countries has deep historical roots spanning more than a century. Tensions notably escalated earlier this year after incidents at a disputed temple and the death of a Cambodian soldier in May. This led to five days of fighting and thousands of people being displaced. An earlier fragile ceasefire was agreed in July, officially signed in October, but collapsed before the current agreement.
