Talks between Thailand and Cambodia commenced at a border checkpoint in Chanthaburi province, set to last four days, aiming to end deadly clashes along their shared border.

Phnom Penh insisted on shifting the negotiations to a neutral venue. Cambodia shared a photo of the delegations, stating the talks seek to cease hostilities, restore stability, and allow a swift return to normalcy.

The renewed fighting this month has resulted in over 40 deaths and displaced approximately one million people.

Thai defence ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri expressed hope for a positive outcome, noting that success depends on Cambodia's sincerity in both word and action.

Previously, Bangkok had demanded Phnom Penh first announce a truce and cooperate in border demining efforts.

Cambodia's interior ministry remains optimistic that Thailand will demonstrate sincerity in implementing a ceasefire despite ongoing cross-border fire.

The conflict traces back to colonial-era demarcation of the roughly 500-mile border and disputed temple ruins on the frontier. Both sides accuse each other of instigating renewed hostilities since December 7.

Earlier clashes in July caused dozens of deaths over five days; a truce brokered by the US, China, and Malaysia ended that round of fighting but was short-lived.

The current talks are expected to continue until Saturday, December 28, 2025.
