Trump and Zelenskyy to Discuss Peace Plan Amid Heavy Russian Strikes on Ukraine
Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are scheduled to meet on Sunday at Mar-a-Lago to discuss a plan aimed at ending the ongoing war, despite continued Russian airstrikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
Zelenskyy arrived in Florida with a Ukrainian delegation, while European leaders are expected to join the talks via video link from Mar-a-Lago.
The discussions will focus on the latest version of a 20-point peace plan, which Zelenskyy says is about 90% complete. Key territorial issues remain unresolved, with proposals including a demilitarised zone and withdrawal from the line of contact, alongside the possibility of a referendum following a 60 to 90-day ceasefire.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has demanded Ukraine hand over territory in northern Donetsk oblast; Zelenskyy's counterproposal calls for the demilitarised zone and withdrawal potentially subject to a referendum after a ceasefire.
Security guarantees intended to prevent further Russian attacks remain a contentious issue. President Trump has not offered any military commitment to defend Ukraine. The original 28-point US plan reportedly demanded Ukraine’s capitulation.
Zelenskyy described Russia's recent large attack on Kyiv as a response to peace efforts. The city was struck by more than 500 drones and missiles, resulting in two deaths and leaving approximately half a million people without power.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry claimed to have seized five settlements in eastern and southern Ukraine, including Myrnohrad and Huliaipole, as talks approach. Ukraine stated it had retaken much of Kupiansk and continued its strikes, including an overnight attack on the Syzran oil refinery. Three civilians were wounded during these ongoing exchanges.
