Two Brown University students killed, nine injured in mass shooting at Providence campus
A mass shooting occurred around 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT) on Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island, at Brown University. The shooting took place in the Barus and Holley Building, part of Brown's engineering school, in a large first-floor classroom during a review session.
Two Brown students were killed and nine others injured, most of whom are in critical but stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital. The identities of the victims have not been released.
A male suspect dressed all in black and possibly wearing a mask was seen on CCTV leaving the building. His identity and motive remain unknown, there is no confirmation of custody, and the type of firearm used has not been disclosed.
In response, Brown University issued lockdown and shelter-in-place orders. Police deployed extra armed resources and escorted people to safe locations. Exams scheduled for Saturday were canceled, and local businesses in the surrounding area locked their doors as customers sheltered in place.
Brown University President Christina Paxson described the incident as devastating. Officials stated there is limited information on the suspect and no confirmed link to the university.
Brown University is an Ivy League institution located in Providence, Rhode Island, with about 11,000 students. Providence is roughly 50 miles from Boston and 180 miles from New York City. This year, the US has experienced 389 mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
