Two Dead and Nine Wounded in Brown University Shooting During Final Exams
A shooting occurred at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on 14 December 2025 in the engineering building, where more than 40 rounds were fired from a 9mm handgun. Two people were killed: Ella Cook, a Brown sophomore from Alabama, and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek first-year student, whose identity was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
Nine others were wounded in the attack. One has been released from the hospital, seven are in critical but stable condition, and one is in critical condition. Among the critically wounded is Kendall Turner, a graduate of Durham Academy.
Authorities arrested a 24-year-old man at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from campus as the sole person of interest. During this raid, two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines were recovered. The individual was taken into custody but later released as investigators indicated evidence pointed in a different direction and the investigation continued.
The shooting took place during Brown’s final exam period. Brown University has approximately 7,300 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students.
The local community has responded with tributes and fundraising efforts for the victims. This tragic incident is part of the 2025 U.S. mass shootings, with the Gun Violence Archive reporting at least 392 such incidents in 2025.
