UK Government Considers New Laws Following Vodafone Franchisee Allegations
The UK government is set to consider new legislation to address the power imbalance in Vodafone franchise agreements after harrowing reports emerged from former franchisees. These stories, reported by The Guardian, include allegations of suicides and attempted suicides among shopkeepers who operated Vodafone stores. The cases have been linked to the period of franchising and debt accrued following commission cuts implemented in 2020.
In Parliament, MPs have called for measures such as a statutory code of practice or a national arbitration system to help redress the imbalance between Vodafone and its franchisees. Government ministers have indicated a willingness to engage in discussions regarding these proposals. The Labour Party has connected the Vodafone issue to broader calls for more stringent franchising laws, citing concerns over corporate accountability similar to those raised in the Post Office scandal.
In 2024, a High Court claim was filed by 62 former Vodafone franchisees alleging that Vodafone unjustly enriched itself by cutting sales commissions in 2020. In response, Vodafone began offering financial settlements to some former franchisees who are not part of the main claim group in September and has launched a fourth internal investigation into the history of its franchising operations.
