UK Government Investigates October Data Hack amid Suspected Chinese Cyber Espionage
The UK government is investigating a recent data breach following a hack that occurred in October. According to Trade Minister Chris Bryant, the stolen government data led to a security gap that has since been closed quickly. The incident has been referred to the Information Commissioner's Office for further oversight.
While investigators have not yet definitively identified the responsible party, a Chinese-affiliated group is suspected to be behind the attack. UK intelligence agencies have issued warnings about a rise in Chinese cyber espionage targeting both commercial and political information.
The Minister emphasized that the risk to individuals is low and stated it is unlikely that personal data of individuals was compromised. However, reports from the Sun newspaper suggest visa details could have been targeted during the incident.
