UK-US Technology Prosperity Deal Talks Remain Active Amid Broader Trade Disagreements
The UK government has stated that discussions with the US on the Technology Prosperity Deal remain active across all levels of government. However, talks have reportedly stalled due to US concerns about wider UK trade barriers and issues such as digital regulations and food safety.
The Technology Prosperity Deal, initially announced during former President Trump's state visit, aims to deepen cooperation between the two countries in areas like AI and quantum computing. The accompanying memorandum of understanding (MOU) is non-binding and contingent on progress on the broader Economic Prosperity Deal.
US science adviser Michael Kratsios indicated that the administration hopes to resume talks once the UK implements its commitments under the Economic Prosperity Deal. Meanwhile, about £31 billion of planned UK tech investment pledged by firms including Microsoft, Nvidia, and Google is believed to be unaffected by the current impasse.
A proposed agreement to eliminate tariffs on UK steel exports to the US is reportedly on hold indefinitely. According to a report by The New York Times, there are broader disagreements involving digital regulations and food safety, though neither the UK government nor the White House commented on those claims.
