Unite Leader Issues Blunt Warning to Labour About Failing to Back Workers
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham has issued a stark warning to the Labour party, urging it to do more for workers in 2026 or risk its own destruction. Graham criticized Labour for being preoccupied with its leadership struggles and inevitability of debates around replacing Keir Starmer. She argued that potential replacements, including Angela Rayner, Andy Burnham, Wes Streeting, or Ed Miliband, would not succeed in winning back workers.
Unite, Labour's main trade union backer, revealed it did not endorse Labour's manifesto because it lacked proper support for jobs. Graham condemned Labour for endorsing what she called austerity-lite approaches and stated that the party's current approach would not break the ongoing doom loop without meaningful policy changes.
Highlighting Britain's need for a clear vision, Graham described the country as rudderless and behind in the fourth industrial revolution. She referred to previous union campaigns, such as opposing cuts to the winter fuel allowance and net-zero targets that lacked adequate investment in new industries. Graham also pointed out Labour's preference for stealth taxes targeting workers rather than implementing a wealth tax on the very rich, urging the party to become a genuine voice for workers.
Looking ahead to 2026, Graham suggested the government might either change course from its current path or face increased scrutiny from inside and outside the political arena.
