University of Michigan Fires Head Football Coach Sherrone Moore Amid Investigation and Arrest
The University of Michigan has fired head football coach Sherrone Moore for cause following an investigation into his engagement in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The dismissal was announced on Wednesday by the university’s athletics director, Warde Manuel, citing a violation of university policy.
Interim University of Michigan President Domenico Grasso addressed the university community in a mass email reiterating the institution’s zero tolerance for such conduct. He described the incident as a breach of trust and emphasized the importance of upholding a campus culture rooted in respect, integrity, and accountability. The investigation will continue, and students are urged to come forward with any relevant information.
Moore, age 39, remains under active law enforcement investigation and was arrested by Pittsfield police in connection with an assault investigation. He was taken into custody and booked into Washtenaw County Jail Wednesday night, with no charges yet listed at the time of booking. The Washtenaw County prosecutor's office stated that charges are not expected to be announced until at least Friday, when Moore is scheduled for arraignment.
A 911 dispatch audio related to the case described a domestic disturbance, with a victim stating that a male suspect had been stalking her for months and at one point placed a knife to his throat before fleeing the scene. Although the police dispatch did not name Moore, TMZ Sports linked the call to a Michigan football employee’s Ann Arbor address at the time of the arrest. Officers indicated the incident appeared targeted rather than random, and a suspect was taken into custody.
Additional audio notes included statements from the suspect's wife reporting that Moore was suicidal due to losing his job.
Following Moore’s dismissal, Michigan named Francis Xavier "Biff" Poggi as the interim head coach. Poggi will lead the team in the upcoming Citrus Bowl against Texas on December 31; he had previously served as interim head coach during Moore’s suspension.
Public scrutiny of Moore’s conduct expanded after an OnlyFans model, Mia Sorety, came forward claiming Moore had slid into her direct messages. Investigators also reviewed Moore’s social media activity, noting he followed numerous OnlyFans and Instagram models as well as college women.
Moore has been married since 2015 and is a father of three daughters.
Moore attended a 2018 Kentucky Derby party hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs at the Louisville Palace hotel, a detail mentioned in connection to background reporting.
