US Appoints Special Envoy to Greenland Amid Danish Backlash
In December 2025, President Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the US special envoy to Greenland. Landry emphasized that the United States seeks dialogue with the Greenlandic people and is not aiming to conquer or annex Greenland. This appointment has drawn diplomatic pushback from Denmark, whose leaders strongly underscored the importance of sovereignty and international law. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen deemed Trump's comments completely unacceptable and announced plans to summon the US ambassador in response. Both Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that national borders and sovereignty are rooted firmly in international law and cannot be altered through annexation. Trump's previous communications in December 2024 and January 2025 had signaled an interest in acquiring Greenland, citing its strategic value and advocating for US-led integration. Additionally, there have been moves to place a Greenland military installation under the US Northern Command as part of a broader shift in Arctic security strategy.
