Venezuela Under Attack Amid Claims of Maduro's Capture by Trump
Former US President Donald Trump claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured and flown out after a pre-dawn assault on Caracas and surrounding regions. He planned a press conference in Florida for 11am local time (4pm GMT) to provide further details.
The Venezuelan government accused the United States of launching attacks on both civilian and military targets. Explosions and reports of low-flying aircraft were confirmed in Caracas, with additional attacks affecting the states of Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua.
In response to the assault, the Venezuelan government urged citizens to mobilize and warned that US military action could lead to chaos across Latin America. They accused the US of attempting to seize the country’s oil and mineral resources and called on the international community to condemn what they described as a flagrant violation of international law.
Meanwhile, Colombia's President Gustavo Petro called for an immediate emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing that Venezuela was under attack.
