Vetevendosje secures parliamentary landslide in Kosovo with Albin Kurti poised for third term
Vetevendosje has won a parliamentary landslide in Kosovo, securing 50.8% of the votes counted with 90% tallied, positioning Albin Kurti for a third term. The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) trailed behind with approximately 21% and 13.9% of the votes respectively. This marks Vetevendosje's fourth consecutive parliamentary victory, occurring after Kosovo had been without a functioning government since the February elections.
Despite the significant win, Kurti does not hold an outright majority and will need to form a coalition, potentially with ethnic minority MPs who are guaranteed 20 seats. Kosovo stands to benefit from substantial financial support, including hundreds of millions of euros in EU funds and potential World Bank agreements that could raise total aid above €1 billion.
Relations with the EU and the US are anticipated to improve; previously, Brussels and Washington had objected to Kurti's measures targeting Serb minority institutions, which heightened tensions in northern Kosovo. The EU has removed punitive measures implemented in 2023 but expects Kosovo to adopt a pragmatic approach towards normalizing relations with Serbia rather than a hardline stance.
