Welsh Grand National and Kempton King George Day Highlights
Chepstow hosts the Welsh Grand National on a day starting with gates opening at 10am and offering half-price drinks from 10:01am. The Welsh National has a storied history, with notable past performances including Carvill’s Hill in 1991 and Native River nine years ago.
The top weight in the race is Intense Raffles, ridden by Bryony Frost; despite several disappointing runs, the horse stands at about 40-1. Realistic contenders for the event include Jubilee Express, Collectors Item (who finished first and second respectively in the Welsh Grand National Trial this December), Rock My Way ridden by Joe Tizzard, O’Connell, Haiti Couleurs, and Mr Vango.
In addition to the Welsh Grand National, there is a five-race card at Chepstow featuring the Finale Junior Hurdle (Grade Two) at 1:40pm.
Meanwhile, Kempton continues its King George day with key races including the Wayward Lad Novice Chase at 1:55pm, a race with a history of notable winners such as Sir Gino, Shishkin, Edwardstone, and Altior. Yesterday’s King George race was decided by a nose among the first three horses, highlighting the dramatic finish of the event.
ITV's card picks for Kempton begin at 1:20pm, and The Guardian's live blog will be tracking developments throughout the day.
