Wessex Water Faces £11m Enforcement Package for Sewage Failures
Ofwat announced that Wessex Water will face a multimillion-pound enforcement package requiring £11 million of extra wastewater infrastructure investment, instead of a fine. The company, serving about 2.9 million customers in the South West, had failed to operate, maintain, and upgrade its network adequately to manage sewage flows. Wessex Water, owned by Malaysia-based YTL, expressed regret over the impact on customers and the environment, stating that the investment package will directly address the issues.
This enforcement is part of Ofwat's wider wastewater investigation, which has resulted in £250 million in fines and enforcement packages, marking Wessex Water's case as the sixth completed. Ofwat's senior enforcement director, Lynn Parker, emphasized the importance of these actions in holding water companies accountable and driving sector transformation. Wessex Water plans to invest £300 million in its sewerage infrastructure by 2030. The enforcement announcement was published on 16 December 2025.
