Widespread Outage Hits X, Spotify, ChatGPT and Other Services Linked to Cloudflare
On Tuesday morning, several major online platforms including X, Spotify, and ChatGPT experienced outages related to Cloudflare services, with over 10,000 user reports logged.
Other affected platforms included Facebook, AWS, bet365, Canva, BrightHR, and League of Legends, according to Downdetector.
The issues began around 11:00 local time, with some sites like X briefly recovering before further interruptions occurred due to an internal server error on Cloudflare's network.
Cloudflare, which provides network and security services to approximately 20% of the world's websites, acknowledged experiencing an internal service degradation impacting some services intermittently.
A fix was identified and recovery efforts were underway by 1:09 PM.
The outage coincided with scheduled maintenance at Cloudflare's Santiago (SCL) data centre on Tuesday.
Industry expert Graeme Stuart of Check Point noted that the outage reflects a recurring issue where a failure in one critical layer of cloud infrastructure can cause wide-ranging disruption due to the centralization of internet traffic among a few cloud providers.
This incident highlights the heavy reliance of numerous online services on a relatively small number of cloud infrastructure providers.
