Zelensky Presents Updated 20-Point Peace Plan Aiming to End War in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has introduced an updated 20-point peace plan, revising an earlier 28-point framework considered Kremlin-favourable. The plan was agreed upon by US and Ukrainian negotiators during talks in Florida over the weekend and awaits Russia's response following its discussions with the US.
The proposal offers security guarantees from the United States, NATO, and Europe, outlining a coordinated response should Russia invade Ukraine again. It includes a potential withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from eastern Donbas, a region of key importance to the Kremlin's demands. Additionally, a "free economic zone" is suggested for eastern Donbas along with zones surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant; these areas could be demilitarised or designated as economic zones under the framework.
The draft plan envisions Ukraine maintaining security guarantees and a military strength of about 800,000 personnel, with sensitive issues intended to be resolved at the leaders’ level. It also calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from four Ukrainian regions—Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv—further outlining steps toward ending the conflict.
This updated 20-point plan is aimed at framing a resolution to the ongoing war, revising the previous 28-point document with a focus on Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
