Zelenskyy and Trump Discuss US Security Guarantees in Revised Peace Framework for Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has outlined a revised peace framework that envisions US security guarantees for Ukraine lasting 15 years, though he had initially requested guarantees for up to 50 years. This proposal emerged during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, where Zelenskyy personally met with former US President Donald Trump and sought the longer duration for the security assurances.
Zelenskyy stated that the security guarantees under the 20-point peace proposal are fully agreed upon from Ukraine's side, while Trump assessed support at about 95%. Despite these advancements, the proposal concerning the demilitarised zone in the Donbas region remains unresolved, with outcomes anticipated in the coming weeks amid ongoing disagreements about territorial terms.
As part of the framework, Zelenskyy has been pressing for "article-5-like" security guarantees from both Europe and the US, aiming to ensure robust protection for Ukraine. These talks follow nearly four years of conflict since Russia's invasion began in February 2022.
