Zelenskyy to Meet European Leaders and Trump for Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Fresh Strikes on Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to join a call on Saturday with European leaders and former U.S. President Donald Trump, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also participating, ahead of Zelenskyy's planned trip to Florida on Sunday for talks with Trump.
The discussions will focus on advancing a 20-point peace plan for Ukraine, which Zelenskyy stated is approximately 90% complete and could reach full completion during the talks. Key points remaining include Ukrainian security guarantees, reconstruction efforts, issues surrounding the Donbas region, and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
Zelenskyy indicated the possibility of holding a referendum on the peace plan if Russia agrees to a ceasefire lasting at least 60 days. If a strong territorial position cannot be secured, public approval would be sought.
Meanwhile, Kyiv experienced fresh missile strikes early Saturday, injuring at least five people. The attacks involved Kinzhal hypersonic, Iskander, and Kalibr missiles, with a fire reported in the Holosiivskyi district and power outages near Brovary. Ukraine's air force issued a nationwide air alert as drones and missiles were detected over multiple regions. In response, Polish fighter jets were scrambled and two southeast Polish airports—Rzeszów and Lublin—were temporarily closed.
Diplomatic efforts continue following recent activity in Miami, where Trump envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian and Ukrainian representatives, including involvement from Jared Kushner. The updated peace plan is based on a previously outlined 28-point document.
Russia's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov criticized Zelenskyy and European allies, stating that a final agreement depends on political will. Ryabkov suggested Kyiv and the European Union are not supportive of the plan and may attempt to undermine it, noting that the current draft differs from earlier U.S.-Russian proposals.
